Steve Barker Announces his Retirement

5 October 2018

ELB Equipment today announces the retirement of Steven Barker, State Manager for Victoria and Tasmania. Steven has been with the company, in its various iterations, for almost 44 years. A phenomenal achievement in today’s’ corporate environment.

ELB’s most tenured employee, Steven started with Mole engineering in 1975 at just 16 years of age and last week celebrated his 60th birthday! He worked in various roles, having held a front row seat to the evolution of the company known today as ELB Equipment. He worked with his grandfather, father, and son over the span of his working life in the company – a rare career achievement.

Steven started his career as a general hand, looking after the warehouse and odd jobs. He was hired by his father, a former general manager of Mole Engineering, and progressed through the ranks to become a senior salesman for the company in the 1990’s. When Mole Engineering was reformed as Ditch Witch Australia, Steven Barker performed an integral role in getting the new business off of the ground, succeeding Mike Breen as State Manager in 2005.

Under his leadership the branch delivered to the market over 200 Ditch Witch directional drills, not to mention a plethora of vacuum excavators, trenchers, mini skid steers, piercing tools, pipeline products, hydraulic tools, and waste recycling equipment. Steven may have touched more pieces of underground construction equipment than anyone else in Australia and would be amongst the longest serving worldwide Ditch Witch employees.

Not only has Steven dedicated his working life to growing the business but has also established deep and long-standing relationships across the industry, today counting many of his customers amongst his close friends. In some instances, he has worked with 2nd and 3rd generations of customers, demonstrating his commitment to the ethos that defines ELB as a business.

“Steven has been a friend and peer to hundreds of customers and co-workers for multiple generations. He’s a man that I judge to be impeccably honest, who always tries to do the right thing, and is forthright in his dealings—you never have to guess where you stand with him and he doesn’t hold a grudge. He’s been a stable and even hand, leading the Melbourne branch for over a decade. He’s been a diligent steward of the organization’s resources and a fierce fighter for Ditch Witch. I am honoured to have worked alongside him. He’s given me things to aspire to.” said Christopher Malan, ELB Managing Director.

ELB Equipment would like to thank Steven for his exemplary service and dedication. While he will be missed, he has certainly earned himself the opportunity to spend more time with his loved ones and plan his next travel adventure.

ELB Equipment are specialist providers of Underground Utility Construction equipment and Waste Management Equipment. With eight full-service locations around Australia and New Zealand, contractors can rely on a single, specialist equipment provider wherever their work takes them.
